Pupil Premium Funding

Pupil premium is funding to improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in schools in England. Evidence shows that disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils.

Is your child eligible for Pupil Premium Funding?

Pupil premium funding is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment and progress of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.  In 2011/2012 schools were allocated Pupil Premium funding for children from low-income families who were eligible for free school meals or had been looked after continuously for more than six months.  From April 2013 the Pupil Premium was extended to include children who had been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years.  A premium has also been introduced for children whose parents are currently serving in the Armed Forces.  Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit however, they are responsible for how they use the additional funding and this must be published on the school website.

Pupil Premium is allocated based on numbers on the Autumn term census data. For the academic year 2020/21 the school has received £31,485 for Pupil Premium funding.

For the academic year 2021/22 the school has  approximately 14% of pupils who are receiving free school meals, have received free school meals in one or more of the previous 6 years (Ever 6), or are a child looked after, or a child from a service personnel.

Pupil Premium is primarily used to fund the cost of additional interventions which support those pupils to help diminish the differences in their learning compared with that of their peers, or support their social and emotional needs and generally help them achieve their full potential. The DfE states: “Schools, head teachers and teachers will decide how to use the Pupil Premium allocation, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for pupils”.

The barriers that some of these pupils face include social and emotional well-being, social and economic barriers including family needs that impact on their learning, a need for support with homework and gaps in learning.  Currently, 23% Pupil Premium children also have Special Educational Needs.

Frequent use of assessment data monitors the effectiveness of interventions and teaching strategies, providing the school with evidence of impact.  Impact of intervention sheets, action plan and APDR reviews and pupil voice are also essential to provide qualitative evidence of progress and the impact of expenditure.  All teachers take responsibility for the progress of the Pupil Premium children within their classes.  Pupil Progress Meetings and Performance Management meetings always include discussions about these children.
